7th
Grade Science Fair Projects
Crystal experiments are one of the most popular of 7th grade science
fair projects. Using kits, you can grow crystals and then observe
and record your findings. Crystals can be extremely interesting
to grow and are sure to impress any judge or teacher!
|
Just be sure to record everything you do
and see. The purpose of the crystal experiment discussed in
this article is to find out under which conditions crystals
grow best.
|
|
For the background information, you will need to find out information
on crystals. You can find out what crystals are, what chemical process
is involved in growing crystals, why crystals are important and
what a supersaturated solution is.
Based on the background information you have researched, you can
then form a hypothesis based on which crystals will grow best depending
on the temperature that they are placed in.
Materials Needed:
- Three kits containing nine crystal growing trees
- Thermometer
- Pencil
- Paper
Procedure:
1.) Collect all the materials needed for the project. Record all
the materials provided with the kits
2.) Follow the instructions included in the kit for putting the
trees together.
3.) Using the instructions provided, place the solution into the
base of the trees. Use only liquid that is at room temperature.
4.) Put the trees on a sturdy surface.
5.) Watch the trees to see how long it takes crystals to begin forming
and record this information.
6.) Let the crystals grow for the time that is needed.
7.) Using the solutions of three other kits, put these in the refrigerator.
When you take them out, record the temperature of the solution.
8.) Again using the instructions provided, place the solution into
the base of the trees.
9.) Put these trees next to the other crystal trees.
10.) Watch the trees to see how long it takes crystals to begin
forming and record this information.
11.) Allow the crystals to grow for as much time as needed.
12.) Working with a parent, bring the solutions of the next three
trees to a near boil.
13.) Cool these solutions for a few minutes and record the temperature.
14.) Use the instructions provided and place the solution into the
base of the trees.
15.) Place these trees beside the others.
16.) Watch the trees to see how long it takes crystals to appear.
Record the time it takes.
17.) Let crystals grow for the required time.
18.) Keep observations separate for each group of trees and record
them all.
Record any data you have gathered during the experiment and compare
the results. Use graphs and charts to show what happened. How long
did it take the crystals in each group to grow? Which grew the fastest?
In the conclusion, summarize what happened in the crystal science
project based on the results. Show and explain the patterns in your
data. See if the data supported your hypothesis and if it didn't,
explain why. Evaluate your crystal project and suggest ways that
it can be improved. Pass along this and other 7th grade science
fair projects to the sixth graders to work on the following year
to see if they can improve upon them.
