Elementary School Science Fair Projects

When children come home with their first elementary school science fair projects, it can be very exciting. Parents can get carried away, however, with elaborate elementary school science fair projects that are far beyond their child's capability.

It's important to remember that elementary school science fair projects are supposed to reflect the child's capabilities, not the parents and too much input from the parents can actually get a project disqualified. It's also important to not have too many displays or a presentation.

Displays can be difficult for a child to put together and a presentation could make them flustered and not give the proper impression of their science project. For elementary school children, answering a question or solving a problem are better ways to go for a science project. Below are some good science fair projects for the elementary child.

  • If you refrigerate an onion before chopping, will you still cry?
  • How much vinegar and baking soda needs to be used to produce the best volcanic reaction?
  • What brand of plastic wrap best reduces evaporation?
  • What brand of plastic wrap best reduces oxidation?
  • Why do night insects like light so much?
  • Do white candles burn slower or faster than coloured candles?
  • If you put detergent in water, will plant growth be the same?
  • Do differently shaped ice cubes melt at different speeds?
  • Compare different brands of popcorn and see which produce the most unpopped kernels.
  • How does adhesive tape react on different surfaces?
  • Shake up different brands of soda and see if they spill differently.
  • Crush a few potato chips on a paper towel. Measure and count the grease spots. You can also see which type of oil used has more grease (sunflower oil vs. soybean oil)
  • What types of mold grow on different kinds of bread?
  • Place different food in different light and see how it affects how they turn bad.
  • Using a household water filter, see if it can remove liquid and color from other liquids.
  • Cook many different kinds of beef (chuck, ground, etc.) and see if they taste the same.
  • Use invisible ink to draw on different types of paper. Does it still show?
  • Buy a few different brands of diapers. Pour solutions of different liquids into the diapers (use the same liquid for one diaper from each brand.) Do they all hold liquid the same?
  • See how long it takes for different brands of batteries to run out of power. Try it with different devices (flashlight, digital camera, etc.)
  • Buy several different kinds of bubble gum and see how the bubbles are different.
  • Using different types of dish detergent, see which ones clean the most amount of dishes.

These are just some ideas for elementary school science fair projects that are easy and fun. Anything the child is interested in will make for a good topic, as long as it can be produced at the child's level.
