Middle
School Science Fair Projects
Middle school science fair projects will be a little more advanced
than those at the elementary level. Although you never want to get
into anything that will be over the student's head, you do want
to challenge them and make them think of things that they may not
have otherwise.

Trying to thinking of a problem and then
coming up with an answer to the problem is a great way to
go.

After all, that's what science is all about! Forming a hypothesis
is important at this age as it gives the students a chance to form
an opinion about what they think will happen.
A presentation is also good for this age group. Any notes should
be typed and it's good to use things such as graphs and pictures.
It's also important to think of a project that can be done in a
short period of time to give the student plenty of time to work
on their report. Remember to always ask the teacher if the supplies
being used will be allowed at the science fair.
Here are some great ideas for a middle school science fair project:
- What repels cockroaches better - catnip or DEET?
- How much water does an orange have compared to other fruit?
- Can a solution filled with sodium chloride still dissolve Epsom
salts?
- How are eggs measured and how accurate are those measurements?
- How does the power of a microwave affect the number of kernels
that are left unpopped?
- What is the nutritional content of canned vegetables and do
different kinds of vegetables have different contents?
- Are permanent markers really permanent? Is there anything (i.e.
water, alcohol, vinegar, detergent solution) that will dissolve
the ink? Is it the same for all types and brands of markers?
- Does using less laundry detergent produce the same results?
- How do different types of hairsprays compare? Do they all hold
for the same length of time? Does it depend on hair type?
- What affect seed germination? Try using different factors such
as light, temperature, amount of water, etc.
- How does the size affect a seed? Do different seeds have different
growth rates?
- How does temperature affect the germination of seeds? Try using
different factors such as different kinds of seeds, how long they're
stored for, how hot or cold the storage is, etc.
- What conditions affect the ripening of fruit? Try enclosing
fruit in a sealed bag, different temperatures, light, or nearness
to other fruit.
- How close does a plant have to be to a pesticide for it to work?
What factors influence the effectiveness of a pesticide?
Middle school science fair projects can be challenging for parents
and students. The trick is to keep Middle school science fair projects
on topic, simple and focused and chances are that they will turn
out well.
