Fair Projects for Kids
Science fair projects for kids can be a lot of fun. Although it
is their project, they probably will need help from one of their
parents or another adult. It's important to remember to keep the
science fair projects for kids at their level even though it may
seem too simplistic to the adult.
|
It's also important to remember that this
is a learning experience for the child.
|
|
This means that they need to be the ones to actually do the project,
with the adult helping only with the things the child can't do for
themselves (like working with the stove.) Below are a few ideas
for engaging science fair projects for kids.
Soft Egg
What you will need:
- A jar
- Vinegar
- A raw egg
- Tongs
What to do:
Put an unbroken egg into a jar of vinegar. Make sure the egg is
covered completely. After about twenty-four hours the shell of the
egg will disintegrate completely leaving the inside of the egg intact
and rubbery. Carefully remove the egg and gently run clear water
over it. The egg will be soft and intact.
A child can take observe what happens and take notes. Explain how
the vinegar dissolves calcium and eats through the shell. The child
can also draw what is seen throughout the experiment. You can also
cut into it and have the child observe what they see. Is the yolk
firm or soft?
To expand on this experiment, you can also try other materials.
Some of these may include using sugar water, plain water, or pineapple
juice instead of vinegar. Instead of an egg you can also try using
a bone, a tooth, or a shell. You can also try doing this experiment
in different conditions. You can put one jar in the fridge, one
jar in the freezer, and one at room temperature and see what the
differences are. You can also try doing this with several different
types and sizes of eggs. Line different jars up side by side and
note the differences in the eggs.
An egg drop experiment is also a very good experiment to do with
kids. You do this by cushioning an egg in a small container to see
if it breaks when dropped from a certain height. You can vary this
experiment by using different containers such as coffee containers,
Tupperware containers, or a small shoe box. You can also vary the
materials you use to cushion the egg.
You can try foam, velvet, or soft plastic. Also vary the heights
from which the container is dropped. And lastly, you can mix up
the surfaces that the containers are dropped on. Because this experiment
does require the "dropper" to be at a higher height, it's
extremely important that an adult is present at all times. Also
take lots of notes on which eggs broke and which didn't and explain
why.
Science fair projects for kids are something that parents and children
can have much fun doing together. Kids have a natural ability to
be curious about absolutely everything! Even if this project was
assigned to them, chances are they won't find it's like work at
all.
